The redevelopment of the former Buffalo Color site involves demolition of most of the former chemical plant. Working under the jurisdiction of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation site preparation began in late April 2009. All demolition was completed in early May 2011.
A significant majority of the site has been remediated and covered with clean soil. Seeding of these areas was completed in 2011. Remediation of land south of South Park Avenue, including the installation of a barrier wall to isolate an existing groundwater treatment system and the placement of clean soil is scheduled to be completed in October 2012. The remaining remediation work will be completed to government environmental standards by December 2012.
South Buffalo Development is partnering with the Western New York Railway Society to redevelop a portion of the site into the Heritage DiscoveRY Center, a cultural tourism and heritage center, including museums and public meeting space for local not-for-profits and community based organizations.
